PBKS beat MI in IPL 2022

Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their fifth consecutive game in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated the five-time champions by 12 runs in Pune on Wednesday.

Chasing a massive target of 199, MI lost both openers – Rohit Sharma (28) and Ishan Kishan (3) – early when the score read 32 in 4.1 overs. Before Punjab could capitalise further, the young batting pair of Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma turned things around with a powerful batting display.

The duo added 84 runs for the third wicket and completely put PBKS under pressure. Brevis and Tilak punished Punjab’s bowlers all around the park to keep Mumbai’s hopes alive. However, Odean Smith came to his side’s rescue, dismissing Brevis, who smashed 49 from just 25 deliveries, with the help of nine boundaries, including four sixes.

The dismissal of Brevis opened the floodgates as Mumbai lost Tilak (36) and Kieron Pollard (10) in quick successions, with both the players meeting unfortunate run-outs. Suryakuamar Yadav kept the pedal on the gas and took the game deep. Surya did well with 43 off 30, including 4 sixes, before falling in the penultimate over, thereby ending all the possible hopes of MI getting their first victory this season. MI eventually reached 186/9 to lose the game by 12 runs.

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal led Punjab’s batting show which saw complete dominance over MI bowlers. Dhawan and Mayank formed an authoritative partnership of 97 runs for the opening wicket before captain Mayank was removed by Murugan Ashwin for a well-made 52 off 32 deliveries, including eight boundaries.

Dhawan kept the run flow from the other end and stayed till the 17th over to make sure Punjab reached a big total. The left-handed batter smashed 70 from 50 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes. Jitesh Sharma (30 not out) and Shahrukh Khan (15) made some quick contributions to help PBKS post 198/5 on the board in 20 overs.
