England’s World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan announced retirement from international cricket on June 28, 2022. The Dublin-born cricketer stepped down as England’s leading run-scorer and most-capped player in both white-ball formats.
Morgan played 225 ODIs for England, scoring 6,957 runs, including 13 hundreds. In T20Is, the left-handed batter represented England in 115 matches and scored 2458 runs. Morgan captained the English team in 126 ODIs and oversaw 76 triumphs with a win percentage of 60 per cent – the best win record by any England Men’s ODI Captain. He also led the Three Lions in 72 T20Is, equal to India’s MS Dhoni as the most in the shortest format.
“After careful deliberation and consideration, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. To call time on what has been without a doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn’t been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point,” said Morgan in an official statement.
Following Morgan’s retirement, the cricket fraternity paid tribute to the legendary England captain. India legend Sachin Tendulkar extended his good wishes to Morgan.
“Congratulations on a wonderful career, @Eoin16. You gave cricket fans several moments to cherish. Best wishes to you. May your 2nd innings be as successful as the first,” tweeted Tendulkar.

“What a career you have had. Changed the way people think and play the game not just in England but globally. Wishing you well in your next chapter. @Eoin16,” tweeted John O Brien.
