A sensational century from the bat and a brilliant bowling display saw Ben Stokes lightning up the Emirates Old Trafford, helping England clinch an innings-and-85-run victory on Day 3 of the second Test to level the ongoing three-match series.
James Anderson (3/30), Stuart Broad (1/24) and Ollie Robinson (4/43) were outstanding in the morning as South Africa slipped from their overnight score of 23-0 to 54-3.
Then, Rassie van Der Dussen (41 off 132) and Keegan Petersen (42 off 159) shared a vital fourth-wicket stand of 87 from 261 balls before Stokes (2/30) removed Van der Dussen and Petersen to help the hosts comeback in the game.
The tourists went on to lose their final seven wickets for 38 runs as England stormed to an innings win, just over a week after suffering a similar loss at Lord’s in the opening match.
The hosts dominated in Manchester Test right from the beginning with a humungous 415/9 declared in their sole innings. Captain Stokes hit his 12th Test hundred and wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes his second and then dismissed the visitors in 85.1 overs in their second innings.
“It has been incredible. It was an amazing atmosphere to be a part of. To come back from last week’s disappointment at Lord’s and put in the performance we have this week, it gives us a lot of confidence back and sets things up nicely for the last game,” said Stokes after the match.

Strong comeback by England in the series. Stokes led from the front with both bat and ball, Foakes was brilliant too. And Anderson what a champion! 950 international wickets for a pacer 🤯 SA will rue electing to bat first. #ENGvSA

James Anderson is the first fast bowler to take 100 wickets against three different teams in men's Tests
Muttiah Muralitharan: 104 v SA, 105 v IND, 112 v ENG
Shane Warne: 103 v NZ, 130 v SA, 195 v ENG
JAMES ANDERSON: 100 v SA, 112 v AUS, 139 v IND#ENGvSA #bbccricket— Mark Puttick (@GryllidaeC) August 27, 2022
WELL PLAYED Eng 🏴 👏🏻 Sadly once @OfficialCSA had changed their team selection & selected 2 front line spinners, they basically had little choice than to bat first. Personally I’d not have changed a winning team, with if needed Elgar & Markram to bowl a few. BIG 3rd TEST! #ENGvSA pic.twitter.com/TksblWRQ1G

Ben Stokes is right up there with the best “steppers” out of the crease against spin in world cricket today. Maybe even the best #ENGvSA

Have already watched about 10 replays of that brute of a ball from Stokes. Happy to watch it at least 586 more times. #ENGvSA
