Twitter reactions: Batters shine in New Zealand’s first-ever ODI series win in West Indies

New Zealand beat West Indies in 3rd ODI

New Zealand registered their first ever series win on Caribbean soil after defeating West Indies in the deciding third and final ODI by five wickets at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Sunday.

A collective batting effort helped the Black Caps gun down the target of 302 in 47.1 overs. The likes of Martin Guptill (57), Devon Conway (56), Tom Latham (69) and Daryl Mitchell (63) all smashed vital half-centuries to power New Zealand to a series-clinching victory. All-rounder James Neesham also made a notable contribution, cracking a quickfire 11-ball unbeaten 34 to take the visitors home.

Earlier, West Indies posted a competitive 301/8 on the board in their assigned 50 overs, thanks to scintillating batting by Shai Hope (51), Kyle Mayers (105) and captain Nicholas Pooran (91).

Hope and Mayers stitched together a dominating stand of 173 for the opening wicket before the tourists came back and removed both openers in quick succession. The dismissal of both top-order batters opened the flood gates as the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite that, Pooran stayed in the middle and ensured West Indies reached a respectable total.

For New Zealand, pacer Trent Boult picked up three wickets for 53 in his quota of 10 overs, including a maiden. However, the star with the ball was Mithcell Santner, who conceded only 38 runs in 10 overs and also claimed a couple of scalps.
