England seamer Reece Topley ruled out of T20 World Cup 2022; replacement announced

Reece Topley ruled out of T20 World Cup

In a major setback to England’s T20 World Cup campaign, fast bowler Reece Topley has been ruled out of the multi-team tournament after injuring his ankle during a practice session in Perth.

Topley rolled his left ankle during a fielding drill in Brisbane ahead of England’s final warm-up game against Pakistan on Monday, October 17.

Topley was then sent for assessment, and a call was expected to be taken ahead of his side’s opening encounter against Afghanistan on Saturday, October 22. The scan results cleared doubts, confirming the left-arm seamer is unfit for participation in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Tymal Mills , who is in the travelling reserves of England squad along with Richard Gleeson, will replace Topley in the final 15.

Notably, Mills had performed well at last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, with seven wickets in four games. His participation in that tournament was ended by a thigh injury, and incidentally, Topley was the one who replaced him in the 15-member squad. Further, the left-armer has ample bowling experience of playing in Australian conditions as he has been a part of Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL).

England’s revised squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Alex Hales, Tymal Mills.
