On Tuesday (January 10), during the match between Fortune Barishal and Rangpur Riders in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2023, angry Shakib Al Hasan was seen marching onto the field and getting involved in a heated argument with both the on-field umpires.
It wasn’t the first time Shakib indulged in a war of words with match officials. He had done something similar a few days back when the veteran all-rounder shouted at the square leg umpire for not giving a wide in the second game of BPL. Furious with the umpire’s decision, Shakib was seen having an animated discussion with the former in that game.
The latest incident occurred when Rangpur’s skipper Nurul Hasan at the start of the second inning, had given the ball to left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan. But after seeing left-handed batter Chaturanga De Silva taking the strike, he changed his mind and chose off-spinner Mehedi Hasan to bowl the first over.
Later, when Anamul Haque took the strike instead of De Silva, Nurul once again returned to Rakib. The ruckus worsened when Barishal’s captain Shakib rushed onto the field and indulged in a verbal spat with both the umpires.
Here’s the video:
Typical #ShakibAlHasan, he is not happy, and making his point clear. Drama before a ball has been bowled in the 2nd innings between Barishal and Riders.

After the game, Shakib was charged a 15% match fee along with teammates Anamul and De Silva for undesirable behaviour and disobeying the umpire’s decision. All three players admitted the offence and accepted the sanction levied by the match referee.
The video of Shakib walking onto the field became a major talking point on social media, and cricket enthusiasts around the world reacted to it. Some even compared the incident to that of former Indian captain MS Dhoni, who had lost his cool in a game against Rajasthan Royals in IPL and went onto the field unhappy with the umpire’s decision.
Talking about the match, Rangpur batting first registered 158/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Rony Talukdar 40 (28) and Shoaib Malik 54 (36) guided the team to a fighting total. While Barishal completed the run chase in 19.2 overs, winning the match by six wickets. Ibrahim Zadran 52 (41) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz 43 (29) shined for Barishal in their victory.
