Womens Ashes 2023: Beth Mooney drives Australia to thrilling win over England in first T20I

The opening T20I of the Women’s Ashes 2023 between England and Australia ended on a thrilling note where the tourist grabbed a 4-wicket win at Edgbaston.

England set a target of 154 runs for Australia in their allotted 20 overs. Sophia Dunkley was the standout performer for England with a brilliant knock of 56 runs off 49 deliveries, including six fours. Amy Jones also made a significant contribution, scoring 40 runs off just 21 balls, including four fours and two sixes. However, England lost wickets at regular intervals, and their innings concluded at 153/7.

Australia showcased their batting prowess in their chase and reached the target in the final over with four wickets in hand. Beth Mooney played a match-winning innings, scoring a superb 61 runs off 47 deliveries, which included nine fours. Tahlia McGrath (40 runs off 29 balls) and Ashleigh Gardner (31 runs off 23 balls) provided valuable contributions to the chase.

For England, Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone were the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets each. Bell conceded 32 runs in her four overs, while Ecclestone gave away 24 runs in her 3.5 overs. Sarah Glenn also contributed with two wickets, conceding 33 runs in her four overs. Mooney’s outstanding batting performance earned her the well-deserved Player of the Match award.
