The 8th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup took place in 2022 in Australia, and England emerged victorious by defeating Pakistan in the final. The forthcoming 9th edition of the T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in 2024, and it will be jointly hosted by West Indies and the USA. This decision is aimed at promoting cricket in these regions and expanding the global reach of the tournament.
As per ESPNCricinfo reports, the T20 World Cup 2024 is expected to begin on June 4 next year. The tournament will span a duration of 25 days, culminating with the final match scheduled for June 30, 2024.
ESPNCricinfo, further stated that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has conducted inspections of several shortlisted venues in the USA for the T20 World Cup 2024. The venues that were inspected include Lauderhill in Florida, Grand Prairie stadium in Dallas, Church Street Park in Morrisville, and Van Cortlandt Park in New York.
Lauderhill in Florida will be hosting the last two T20I matches between West Indies and India of the ongoing T20I series. However, the other stadiums in the USA, namely those in Dallas, Morrisville and New York, are yet to receive international venue status. This means that they have not been officially approved to host matches during the tournament.
As of now, the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC), which is a new professional T20 league in the USA, has hosted the T20 games in two venues: Morrisville’s Church Street Park and Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. These venues are currently being used for domestic cricket matches, but they are yet to be granted the status to host international matches, such as those in the T20 World Cup.
T20 World Cup 2024 Teams
The ninth edition of T20 World Cup will feature a revamped format, different from the previous editions. In this tournament, a total of twenty teams will participate, and they will be divided into four groups for the group stage.
During the group stage, the teams in each group will compete against each other in a round-robin format, playing a set number of matches. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage.
In the Super Eight stage, the eight qualifying teams will be further split into two groups, with four teams in each group. These two groups will also play a round-robin format, with each team facing the other teams in their group.
After the completion of the Super Eight stage, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-final matches will progress to the Grand Final, where they will compete for the prestigious T20 World Cup title.
T20 World Cup 2024 Format
The ninth T20 World Cup will feature a total of ten teams. The hosts, West Indies and the USA have automatically qualified to participate in the main event. Additionally, the top eight teams from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022 have also secured their spots in the tournament. These eight teams include India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
Furthermore, two teams, Bangladesh and Ireland, have qualified for the tournament based on their T20I rankings. Scotland and Papua New Guinea have also made it to the event thanks to their performance in the regional qualifiers.
However, there are still five slots to be filled in the tournament. These slots will be determined through regional qualifiers in the Americas, Africa and Asia regions. One team from the Americas, two teams from Africa, and two teams from Asia will secure their places in the T20 World Cup through these qualifiers.
