In a crucial Group D fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St. Vincent, Bangladesh clinched a 21-run victory over Nepal, propelling them into the Super Eight stage.
Bangladesh’s batting struggles and recovery
Bangladesh faced early setbacks after Tanzid Hasan was dismissed on the first ball of the match, caught and bowled by Sompal Kami. The top order continued to falter as Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto fell quickly, leaving Bangladesh at a precarious 21 for 3 by the fifth over. Shakib Al Hasan attempted to stabilize the innings with a patient 17 off 22 balls, but fell victim to Rohit Paudel’s lbw decision. Towhid Hridoy’s brisk 9 off 7 balls provided a brief spark, but regular wickets continued to dent Bangladesh’s progress. Rishad Hossain injected some late momentum with a quickfire 13 off 7 balls towards the end, helping Bangladesh reach 106 runs before being bowled out in 19.3 overs.
Nepal’s woes in the chase
Chasing 107 for victory, Nepal’s innings got off to a disastrous start with early wickets falling in quick succession. Kushal Bhurtel (4 runs), Anil Sah (0 runs), and Rohit Paudel (1 run) departed early, leaving Nepal reeling. Aasif Sheikh showed resistance with 17 runs before falling to Mustafizur Rahman’s bowling. Kushal Malla battled on with 27 runs, but Nepal struggled to form significant partnerships and collapsed towards the end. They were eventually bowled out for 85 runs in 19.2 overs, falling short by 21 runs.
Bangladesh’s bowling dominance: Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s exceptional spell
Bangladesh’s victory was largely set up by their bowlers, particularly Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman. Tanzim Hasan Sakib was exceptional, picking up 4 wickets for just 7 runs in his 4 overs, applying immense pressure on the Nepalese batters throughout his spell. Mustafizur Rahman also contributed significantly with 3 wickets for 7 runs in his quota of 4 overs, displaying his trademark variations and control. Shakib Al Hasan chipped in with 2 wickets to hasten Nepal’s collapse, ensuring Bangladesh’s qualification for the Super Eight stage.

Tanzim Hasan Sakib becomes the first ever Bangladesh player to bowl more than one maiden over in a T20 World Cup (men/women) match today.#BANvNEP #T20WorldCup

This Tanzim fellow is crazy bro that is some mohammad Amir vs India type bowling. 🤯🤯

This has been a fine spell of fast bowling from Tanzim Hasan. Equally poor batting from Nepal. You cannot be losing these many wickets in the first 7 overs. Our batters, so far, haven't backed up our good bowling performance in th first innings.#NEPvBAN

Tanzim finishes with figures of 4-7 in his 4 overs, unreal bowling and seems Bangladesh have found a new gem 🔥#BANvNEP #T20WorldCup

A wicket maiden in the 19th over. That's Mustafizur Rahman for you. That change of pace is so difficult to hit. #T20WorldCup #BANvsNEP
— Shamak Layeeq (@shamak_layeeq) June 17, 2024
Nepalese batters havent played someone of Mustafizur's calibre and Airee, a world record holder hasn't been able to put bat on ball. But many bigger names have failed to tackle the Fizz. Nepal will only improve.#BANvNEP#ICCT20WC
