The West Indies secured a nervy victory by 5 wickets against Papua New Guinea (PNG) in their opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.
West Indies chase falters initially
Chasing a modest total of 137 set by PNG, the Windies batting order stumbled early, losing wickets at regular intervals. Opener Brandon King provided a spark with a well-made 34, but the middle order failed to capitalize.

Roston Chase, batting at number four, played a crucial anchor role, scoring an unbeaten 42 runs to guide the chase. However, with the required run rate climbing towards 12, the pressure began to mount on the Windies.

In the 17th over, with tension rising, all-rounder Andre Russell stepped up to the challenge. Facing John Kariko, Russell unleashed a powerful swing, connecting with the ball for a massive six that sailed over midwicket and into the stands. This crucial six not only eased the pressure but also boosted the Windies’ confidence.

With Russell’s came and some composed batting from Chase, the West Indies eventually crossed the finish line in 19 overs, securing a hard-fought victory.

Russell’s bowling prowess earlier
Earlier in the match, Russell had showcased his all-around talent with a brilliant bowling spell, picking up 2 wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs. He also became the sixth WI player to complete 50 wickets in the T20I format.
Dwayne Bravo (78), Jason Holder (66), Samuel Badree (54), Sunil Narine (52) and Sheldon Cottrell (52) are the other WI bowlers with 50-plus T20I wickets.
