Jaffna Kings bags LPL 2024 title

The eagerly awaited final of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 took place at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Jaffna Kings faced off Galle Marvels in the summit clash and came up with a dominating performance, winning the contest by 9 wickets and claiming their overall 4th LPL title.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa powers Galle Marvels to a big total

The Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first. Marvels faced a challenging start as their top order struggled against the disciplined bowling of the Kings. Openers Alex Hales and Niroshan Dickwella were both dismissed cheaply, contributing only 6 and 5 runs respectively. The middle order saw a glimpse of hope with Tim Seifert scoring a steady 47 off 37 balls, supported by Janith Liyanage‘s 7 runs.

However, it was Bhanuka Rajapaksa who turned the game around for the Marvels. His explosive innings of 82 runs off just 34 balls, featuring 8 fours and 6 sixes, propelled the team to a competitive total. Contributions from Sahan Arachchige (16) and Dwaine Pretorius (12) further bolstered the score, leading the Marvels to 184/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The Jaffna Kings’ bowlers had mixed results, with Asitha Fernando shining with figures of 3/35, while Jason Behrendorff chipped in with 2/18.

Rilee Rossouw’s sizzling ton secures Jaffna Kings LPL 2024 title

Chasing 185, the Jaffna Kings’ innings began on a shaky note as opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for a duck on the very first ball. However, Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw quickly steadied the ship. Mendis played a scintillating knock of 72 runs off 40 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes, setting a solid foundation for the chase.

The highlight of the innings was Rossouw’s magnificent century. His unbeaten 106 off 53 balls, embellished with 9 fours and 7 sixes, was a masterclass in aggressive batting. Together, Mendis and Rossouw stitched a dominant partnership that left the Galle Marvels bowlers struggling to contain the flow of runs. The Kings reached the target comfortably in just 15.4 overs, finishing at 185/1 and securing a comprehensive victory by 9 wickets.

Rossouw’s sensational innings earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award. His aggressive yet calculated approach ensured the Jaffna Kings cruised to victory, showcasing his prowess as one of the premier batters in the tournament.
