“I think GG had his style, I have…”: KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo on taking help from Gautam Gambhir ahead of IPL 2025

Dwayne Bravo - Kolkata Knight Riders

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for its 2025 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are preparing to defend their title under new mentorship. Dwayne Bravo, the former West Indies all-rounder, has taken over the mentor role from Gautam Gambhir, who led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024 before becoming the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

In a recent interview, Bravo emphasized his intention to build on Gambhir’s successful strategies while introducing his own unique approach to the team.

Dwayne Bravo’s approach and Gautam Gambhir’s legacy

Bravo acknowledged the distinct leadership styles he and Gambhir possess, stating,  “I think GG had his style, I have my style. We’re both successful in our own ways. Definitely, I messaged him a few times and stuff. But again, I will be leaning a lot on these guys because they had a successful formula.”

Despite their differences, Bravo recognized the importance of learning from Gambhir’s achievements. He revealed that he had messaged Gambhir several times to seek advice and understand the elements that contributed to KKR’s success in the previous season.

“I think it’s going to be disrespectful of me not to try and find out some of the good things he did last season,” Bravo noted, highlighting his respect for Gambhir’s contributions to the team. However, Bravo also emphasized his own experience and the value he brings to the role.

With a storied career in the IPL, including stints with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), Bravo has accumulated 1,560 runs and taken 183 wickets in 161 matches, making him one of the most successful all-rounders in the tournament’s history.

KKR’s team dynamics and challenges

KKR faces the challenge of defending their title without some key players from the previous season. Despite these losses, Bravo expressed confidence in the core team that remains. “Unfortunately, we lost some players. But the core of the team is here,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining continuity and stability within the squad.

The team’s leadership structure has also seen changes, with Ajinkya Rahane taking over as captain following Shreyas Iyer’s departure to Punjab Kings (PBKS). Venkatesh Iyer will serve as Rahane’s deputy, providing continuity from the previous season.
