The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 was hit by a major controversy during the clash between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.
The eye-catching incident took place in the final over of the DC’s chase when they required 36 runs to win the contest. Caribbean big-hitter Rovman Powell decided to go for the full monty, smashing three sixes on the trot to bring the equation down to 18 runs off the final three balls.
The third ball of the over seemed to be a waist-high full toss, and many, including DC skipper Rishabh Pant, Shane Watson and David Warner in the dugout, expected it to be a no-ball. But the on-field umpires did not ask for the third umpire’s call and ruled the ball as a legal delivery.
The drama escalated further after a visibly upset Pant gestured his batters – Powell and Kuldeep Yadav – to a walkout. Not even this, one of the DC’s coaches, Pravin Amre, went into the playing arena but was told to go back by the on-field umpires.
After all the controversy, eventually, things calmed down, and RR ended up winning the contest by 15 runs. No wonder many experts and social media users also reacted to Pant’s frustration as the wicketkeeper-batter came at the receiving end for his behaviour.
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin termed the behaviour of DC against the spirit of cricket and completely unacceptable.
“Bad sportsman spirit on display by #DelhiCapitals Cricket is a game of gentlemen, and this behaviour is completely unacceptable. #IPL20222 #DCvsRR,” tweeted Azharuddin.

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg reckoned that the umpire’s decision should have been accepted, and he was more upset with some of the senior members in the DC camp than Pant.
“Umpire made call, accept it. I am not that upset with Pant, but more so, some of the senior people around Pant in the dug out for not helping settle the situation. Momentum was with DC, pressure on bowler, carry on put batter in negative mood and bowler had time to calm. #DCvRR,” wrote Hogg on Twitter.

Former India pacer RP Singh looked upset with Pant and wrote: “Didn’t expect Pant could do that. Not cricket. #IPL20222.”

Ex-India cricketer Hemang Badani observed that everything happened in the heat of the moment, but there should be no place for such behaviour in cricket.
“I know this was in the heat of the moment, but this should never happen ever.Completely concur that they should have gone to the third umpire but still no place for such things in this sport. The umpires r there for a reason & every now & then, they will get a few decisions wrong,” tweeted Badani.

So umpires check no balls for front foot every ball, but can’t check a high full toss? Makes sense… pic.twitter.com/RUOX3Yh3YF

There are plenty of rules that need to change in cricket, with the game evolving over time I am sure this will evolve too. I just think we saw a great game of cricket and as much as we all love a bit of controversy the better team won in the end! #RRvsDC #IPL2022
