Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting was recently appointed as the head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) on a four-year deal, just two months after leaving his role with Delhi Capitals (DC). Ponting’s arrival brings fresh hope for the franchise, which has struggled for consistency in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Why Ricky Ponting chose Punjab Kings?
Despite being one of the most respected and sought-after coaches in the cricketing world, Ponting revealed that he carefully considered multiple offers before settling on Punjab Kings. The opportunity to rebuild a franchise that has often failed to live up to its potential was a key factor in his decision.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Ponting said, “Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was ‘Project Punjab’ which attracted me. It is a team that hasn’t had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that’s changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge.”
Ponting’s desire to transform PBKS into a formidable side comes from his love of tough assignments, and the possibility of guiding an underachieving team to the top.

Ponting’s vision for PBKS
Ponting is not just looking for short-term success but is focused on building a squad that can compete consistently for the IPL title over the next few years. His plan involves retaining and nurturing the young talent that has impressed him in the past seasons.
“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL,” he said.
This long-term vision could mean fewer drastic changes in personnel and a more stable setup, something Punjab Kings have lacked in previous seasons. The aim is clear: establish a team that can regularly challenge for the IPL crown while developing a core group of players who will form the foundation of future success.
Vast coaching experience in the cash-rich league
Ponting’s vast experience in the IPL makes him one of the most seasoned and successful coaches in the tournament’s history. His previous stints with Mumbai Indians as a mentor and Delhi Capitals as head coach have yielded great results. Under his mentorship, Mumbai Indians secured their first IPL title in 2015. Ponting later took charge of Delhi Capitals in 2018, and within two seasons, he led them to their first-ever IPL final in 2020. His deep understanding of the league’s dynamics, ability to nurture young players, and calm yet assertive leadership have earned him widespread acclaim.
